Sanam Agha

Sanam Agha is not your usual model who lends her face to any and every commercial/serial etc. She is quite choosy about the kind of ventures she takes on. After all she's also a designer so she has to have credibility in the market. These days Sanam is busy establishing her outlet and planning a fashion show which leaves her with very little time for showbusiness. Here, she gets chatty with Mag4you.com and talks about life as a model.

How much do you feel for a particular brand when you are modelling for it?
I have not modelled for many brands since I guess I am not really a model in certain terms, I do model but consider myself more of what one would call 'Talent'.

What sort of a contribution can a model make towards the fashion industry?
The fashion industry and models go hand in hand. The major contribution that a model can make towards the industry is by promoting the product. Its simple, the industry needs the models and vice versa.

The industry obviously has given you a lot making you a prominent name... how do you think you can pay back?
I have worked in the industry in many different areas such as acting, modelling, hosting etc, I think that as the industry gives me the opportunity to work I give them my best and therefore whatever I work in or do is with gratification. I am already giving back to them as they have to me.

Do you think our models have the capacity of matching the best in this business elsewhere in the world or even our neighbours India?
I think we have some great models some of whom will always be remembered. Working abroad is different than working here, I have seen both. I used to work in the PR department for London Fashion week some years ago and I have seen the difference. Things there are black and white, things here have a grey area. Our models would do great in India but they work in a certain way in India, while here they work differently. To work together there has to be a unified front and collaboration where both the teams can learn from each other.

Do you think our industry or market is big enough to give our models the opportunity to do that?
Of course it is!

Is modelling a lucrative business? What's the commercial aspect of modelling besides the fame and glamour factor?
It is a business where if you have staying power then it can become your life. Fame and glamour is there in every industry around the world and one can make money in all sorts of businesses. However, models do learn from the industry and some take their learning and use the knowledge to create business ventures of their own.

If given a chance what steps would you take to revolutionise the modelling industry?
Oh well, that's an interesting question. I think there are many things that can be done, but the most important is to learn from the world out there and putting that knowledge into practice here. We still have a long way to go and creating a unified industry is important. I would love to form collaborations between models abroad and our industry and vice versa. By this I don't mean taking them abroad and putting them into a show. My point is to form an educational collaboration between the other industries in the world and ours which will benefit us greatly.

Are there any agencies working on your behalf? Would you like someone to do it all for you from finding, selecting and finalising the projects?
No I do not have anyone working it out for me; everything I do is freelance.
I would love to have an agent but here I prefer doing things myself, there are less politics involved that way.
