Talent, not considered a priority, can be taken care of; after all what are the sets for? Of course to learn and polish your acting as you proceed. For all those who do not have the potential but certainly the looks, now’s the time for you to make a debut, for its more about quantity than quality these days.
Conan, oops we mean Konain – and not the muscle-packed barbarian, rather the slender lass – is one such aspirant who really liked what she saw so much, that she willingly decided to rebel and pursue her dreams.
This is what our tete-a-tete with her informed us. Want to know what noncommittal really is? Talk to Konain and you’ll find out the real meaning of the word. No matter what you say or what you ask, you will be met by a guarded answer telling you nothing about the personality nor allowing you an insight into the person she is.
Konain is a rolling stone in the world of glam and has yet to carve a niche for herself as she is still a vague face to most. She has made a few appearances in commercials and plays, interspersed with insignificant fashion shows.
She breezed into the arena eight months back and has since then realised that this is something she enjoys to the hilt. It took lots of courage and defiance for this girl to get where she is today. As usual, she was confronted with opposition from her dad and her older brother too.
But Konain always knew what she wanted, and it was to be a star. “My father wanted me to be a doctor and tried to force me and then cajole me into taking it up as a profession but I never had the temperament to be one. So I enrolled myself in commerce and right now am a student of B.Com final.”
Konain belongs to Lahore where her family is settled. Her college was in the same city till the time she started commuting back and forth from Karachi to Lahore. “That’s when my studies started suffering as I could not give them enough time.” So an agreement was reached between the girl and her college management that she would attend college whenever she was free from her artistic pursuits.
Lucky for her that she has such an understanding educational fraternity! This was around the time when she came to Karachi with bag and baggage and was desirous of making her mark in this field. “When I first told my family of my inclination towards showbiz there was a major problem at my place. They were all averse to the idea but I stuck to my ground as it was something I had to do.
” However, it was her father’s money that she put into her first production. Seems a bit contradictory, if her father was so strongly opposed to her choice of career?? Seems very convenient that he wiilingly dished out money to his daughter to get her career moving.
“Internet was my first venture.” Surprisingly she made her debut in showbiz by producing a teleplay. How did you come up with the idea of going into production, we inquire? “I just wanted to do something different and out of nowhere the idea came to me to experiment with television production.”
What was the experience like? “Pretty hectic but very interesting at the same time. You can’t act and be a producer simultaneously. Acting itself is a tedious job. As for running the whole show, it is something else altogether.”
Has anyone else in your family ever tried their hand at it? “No one.” What about your father? “He has his own business,” – again the same guarded tone and apprehension apparent in her manner as she speaks.
Business handling what, we inquire? “He’s into import export,” came the answer, crisp and curt.
Any plans of joining him in his business? “None whatsoever,” comes the vehement reply.
It’s really novel for someone so young taking on such a tough professional attitude. And in addition to that, going for something new without any guidance or direction, takes a lot of nerve, so we curiously inquire, were you guided by anyone, maybe a mentor? “I have learnt everything on my own.”
Enough of prodding and we finally ask how old she is? Caught off guard is exactly what Konain seems to be for she falters in her speech and keeps on saying, “Umm, umm, umm” and then hesitatingly, “Sachi sachi bata doon,” surprised, I reply of course.
After another self-conscious pause, “I’m seventeen.” I inquire what was the jhooti age? “Agar mein sweet sixteen kehti,” and then she laughs in that deceptive manner again. Like wow, why do people challenge your intelligence as if you’ve just entered the world?
So our seventeen year old lass then finally landed in Karachi leaving behind a father, three siblings and a mother. “My mother is with me,” she interjects.
Konain has so far appeared in a serial Khandan, Titliyaan, Bano Ka Ghar besides an odd play here and there and more recently she is busy in an Abid Ali serial that has yet to be aired. Besides, she has done a couple of candy commercials and is also the unfortunate spouse of Sajjad Ali in his recent Panion Mein.
At this stage showbiz is a full-fledged career for this lass. She has worked opposite Adnan Jilani, Kamran Wajid, Saleem Sheikh of the prominent ones and claims, “It was very good working with all of them.” Anyone you would like to work with again, somebody with whom you felt you clicked.
“Oh I’d like to work with all of them again.” Did we mention non-committal? Nadeem Baig has the honour of being Konain’s favourite hero and she would simply “love” to work with him. As for her favourite actress she says, “I want to be my own favourite actress..” Huh!? didn’t get that! Did you?
Since she seems quite bold and progressive we assume films would be next on the agenda? “My family will never like that,” forever the obedient daughter. But then your family never liked your entering this field as it is.
“They never felt that strongly about it.” Didn’t she, a few minutes back reveal that her dad was completely opposed to the idea? But what can we say, as talking to Konain is like conversing with a bundle of contradictions.
So why not films? “It’s not in sync with my personality. Vulgarity is a major problem. I have been offered movies time and again. Ajab Gul and Iqbal Kashmiri’s were the most recent offers. But I wasn’t interested.”
A life long career is not what showbiz is all about for this girl. Once she ties the knot she will discontinue as, “I know he will not like it.” That means there is a HE currently?
“Oh no, but I just know when he is there he wont like it, its pretty natural. No guy ever likes to see his girl on TV.”
Which brings us to a description of Mr. Ideal for Konain? “Never really thought about it. Can be anyone. It often happens with me that I like people who no one else approves of and vice versa. It’s actually the personality that is important to me.
Looks have never been a consideration.” But then neither is money for she promptly says, “Money has never been that important to me,” and adds, “he should be able to fulfill my needs.”
Besides acting and modelling there isn’t much that this lass does as she is busy most of the time and when she does get some time off she unwinds by listening to Nusrat Fateh Ali’s songs and only NFA’s songs. That’s the latest on Konain and if you want to know more, check out the mini screen!
