Kamran Jillani

'I'm not keen of working on Indian channels' Today Kamran Jillani is a house hold name. A talented offspring of Jillani Family, for whom acting comes quite naturally, perhaps via his genes.

Although, his BBA degree helped him got a steady job in the banking sector, but soon he realised that he is perhaps like a misfit entry in the credit-debit ledgers of accounting registers. In the meanwhile, an offer came in his way and he decided to give it a try and the rest, they say, is history.

Kamran considers 'Shaam Say Pehlay' the serial, which paved a foothold for him and the whole credit goes to producer Kazim Pasha who gave him a chance to make his presence felt.

Then it was a serial 'Zehar Baad' which further pushed him to the main league of actors and last but not the least it was 'Mehndi', after which it was no looking back. Today, he seems to be the necessity of the producer but this hasn't brought even the slightest change in his personality and temperament, which is so simple and down to earth.

When an artiste succeeds to establish his solid footing in a particular image, then it becomes quite difficult for him to get out of that particular mould. Jamshed Ansari and Behroz Subzwari are quite a few examples, who sans any doubt, are from a very versatile breed of the artistes, but nobody accepts them in a serious role.

Kamran on the other hand, believes in versatility and doesn't want to restrict him to a particular set of roles. "An artiste has a very thin shelf life. He grows with the variation of his work, 'cause a change is always felt and if good it makes it place. I don't crave for a fixed image or a fixed portrayal.

I want my viewers to discover new facets of the prowess of my performance. Humayun Saeed is a very outstanding artiste but he was unable to realise that acceptance of similar type of roles would take him to a level where he won't be able to get out of it."

Kamran believes that today television, everywhere in the world, is like a member of the family. But like anything else, which loses its substance when repeated so customarily, an artiste who doesn't maintain his versatility is also unable to continue as long as he desires and soon he has to see the back door.

"I have now become very choosy and selected when it comes to the acceptance of a role. Now, I believe that in order to get something substantial one is supposed to refrain from doing the same thing again and again.

Look 'aik mehmaan bhi agar apkay ghar bar bar aaye ga, tu aap usko poochna chor dain gay'. That's may be one of the reasons why quantity doesn't even qualify as an issue for me today. What I look for is the kind of role, which may bring out the best of Kamran Jillani. And that's exactly how I set my priorities these days."

In the extreme sense of the word, Kamran is absolutely right but one thing that needs some more explanation as to whether the versatility confines to the positive roles only? "I'm lucky that in every role people have extended their appreciations for me.

I have even tried negative roles, as I don't believe that for such a role one has to be dark, loaded with a husky voice and snake eyes or a disgusted personality. Infact, it's the performance of an artiste which contributes a difference and I think that even a chocolate face hero can turn the public dislike him with his powerhouse performance.

The more an artiste is being disliked the more it would be endorsement of his astounding talent. An artiste's job is to perform, no matter what type of the role it may be. If it offers substance and promises significance an artiste should go for it. That's how I view things."

Mehndi stands out as a milestone in Kamran's career. The outstanding success of the serial further consolidated his position and brought him quick rewards. Talking about the reasons of the serial's astounding success Kamran explained, "Mehndi was a subject based on women issues.

It was a beautifully netted story and each character was well explained. Under Javed Fazil's superb direction and Evernew Pictures convincing marketing planning the serial successfully made its presence felt," but doesn't the idea was an inspired one? I argued and Kamran smiled and understood what I wanted to point out, "I think everything that exists here is a result of inspiration.

Its inspiration that eventually helps you to identify your mistakes and then help you to sort them out. It's rather a source of perpetual improvement that's perhaps a very important part of our lives. Its like you go to the market, something inspires you and you decide to get it in your home.

But copying something and getting inspired are two different issues quite polls apart. So as far as Mehndi is concerned, it dealt with a story that we experience all around us in real life.

The marital problems and hurdles faced by the parents and the girls themselves were portrayed in the serial quite realistically and beautifully. It offered great entertainment to the viewers and they still remember it, which is something very rare in the present rat race."

Homework is very important for an artiste to make his presence felt. However, today it seems as the artistes have forgotten the myth. Ever since the private sector has questioned the monopoly of Ptv the standards have reached to the extent of an alarming level.

"That's true," Kamran supports the argument and continues, "but the responsibility cannot be fixed to the artistes only as the equation contains some other elements, equally important to share the balance. Infact, in the present scenario, from director to artiste and from writer to an ordinary technician,

Everybody is following a rat race, which is a result of inception of a large number of new channels, adding to the scene. Every person wants to cash the time, which promises considerable wealth. So, the quality is where the balance disturbs.

Kamran has no instant desires to join the Lollywood camp whereas many believe it to be the only way to the vertical graph. "I guess at this stage joining films would be futile for an artiste like me who is having a good career at tube.

Secondly, I believe in doing one thing at a time and since films demand a lion's share of an actor's time, therefore, I don't think I would be able to spare that out of the present situation.

Moreover, the quality of films is not that convincingly attractive for me. I feel that good educated people is an instant demand of the Lollywood and no instant fruits are expected if the present trends and practice is not discouraged."

In future, Kamran wants to see him standing at a place where he would be compared with the legendry artistes and in order to attain that, he is making it hundred percent sure that he is going for such kind of roles which improves his image as an artiste.

"I believe in experimentation and change. This is something that doesn't let your charm fade away as you are being deemed to be delivering something new and that comes as surprise for the viewers, augmenting their level of curiosity," Kamran informs enthusiastically and continues, "Like other people I'm not keen of working for Indian based channels.

I don't have any inferiority complex as I think that we are still good as compared to those foreign channels, which offer nothing but glamour. Whereas, we show reality and that's perhaps how drama is defined."
