Farhad Humayun

Interview with Overload (Farhad Humayun)

What is your date of birth and your star sign?
5th October, Libra

What inspired you to become a musician?
I don't really know what it was but there is always a hidden talent in every person and the same was with me. Since I was a child I always wanted to do something related to arts or performing arts. I wanted to express myself in a creative way and so I discovered that music was the medium at which I could best express my inner emotion.

What other instruments would you like to play apart from drums?
I would love to learn to play a piano. Apart from that I can play a guitar and bass.

What kind of music do you like to listen to?
Everything from industrial to electronic to trash metal, Indian classical music, jazz but I cannot stand country music and reggae - Bob Marley was cool but I don't like to listen to that genre.

When was 'Overload' formed and what is the concept behind calling your band 'Overload'?
'Overload' was formed about 4 years ago but we came on the forefront about two and a half or three years ago at the Indus Music Awards. We did not have a particular name for our band until the Indus Music Awards happened. While we were playing live at the event we became so loud with our music that one of the speakers exploded and caught fire and after that incident we realized that 'overload' is the name that we should give to our band! We produce heavy music!

If you had not been a musician, what other profession would you have chosen?
I like to paint. If not a musician, I would have been an artist or an extreme sportsman, because I have this fascination for climbing and skydiving (laughs) even though I'm not good at sports. Actually I would have liked to have been a stuntman!

Did your parents encourage you to become a musician or did they opposed your decision?
Never! Both my parents are pro artists. My mother is an actress and my father is a businessman and a sportsman. My parents never opposed me in fact they have always supported me.

Where do you see 'Overload' in the next 10 years?
We definitely want to go and perform abroad! We have performed internationally before also like in Japan, Spain and Norway but it seemed as if we were still performing for a Pakistani audience. We want to perform for the local public of the place. We see ourselves doing that in about 5 years Inshallah!

You have been nominated for the 'Best Live Act' category in the Lux Style Awards,  how do you feel about that?
It feels really good as this is the only credible and prestigious award show in our country. We feel encouraged as our public has started to accept us. Last year we were nominated as well but we knew that we weren't going to win the award. Let's see what we have in store for ourselves this year.

Among the nominees of the Lux Style Awards who do you think is your biggest competitor?
I don't know. Ours is the only band that produces instrumental music. There's no other instrumental band in this category. But I think our competitors would be Mikal Hassan Band and Strings. They are excellent!

What message would you like to give to the upcoming bands?
I would like to say to them to hang in there and keep at it; believe in your music and when you believe that this is what you were born to do only then can you go ahead.
