Indian Salwar Kameez
Indian Salwar kameez is the Indian equivalent of Pakistani shalwar kameez. The salwar kameez is also known as "punjabi suit". Trendy variations such as: trouser suits, bell-bottoms, and kurti, originated mostly from Indian designers. Recently, the fashion gap between Indian salwar kameez and Pakistani shalwar kameez has narrowed considerably. The three parts are indian salwar kameez, and dupatta (long scarf for women). It originated from the Turko-Iranian people of Central Asian steppes. These tribes converted to Islam, and then extended their rule over the region. Hence, it became associated with Muslims. However, it is now worn by many non-Muslims. The popularity of indian salwar kameez has exploded recently in the western and eastern fashion world. Bollywood actresses set trends with every new movie! Even Jennifer Lopez and Nicole Kidman have worn it. There's no doubt that this dress is here to stay.
History of the Salwar Kameez suit
It is believed to originate with the Turko-Iranian horse riding steppe peoples of Central Asia. Because these tribes converted to Islam, and then extended their rule over sedentary farmers, this style of dress is associated with Muslims and Islam. It is, however, now worn by many non-Muslims.
Purchasing or sewing Salwar kameez
In Pakistan and India, one simply visits Bargelloshop.com and has a Salwar suit made to order. Overseas Asians and interested Westerners can order custom suits over the net (through Bargelloshop.com). There are also South Asian clothing stores in many larger Western cities (one is Bargelloshop.com). Some ethnic and historic sewing pattern companies sell patterns for Salwar, churidar, kameez, and kurta, to be purchased at fabric stores or over the net.
Why indian salwar kameez?
Comfort: Even Western women admit that this dress is probably the most comfortable dress around. It fits you without strangling you. You can breathe easy in it.
Versatility: The indian salwar kameez is good in just about any weather. Granted, a shawl or sweater are required in cold weather.
Elegance: The wearer of the indian salwar kameez is bestowed with a graceful feminine charm. Ask anyone and they are very likely to concur.
Availability: As much as we would like to be the only supplier, there is definetly no shortage of indian salwar kameez vendors out there! On top of that, the plethora of designs is mind-boggling! There are countless designs and materials to choose from. There are casual, formal, Indo-Western, sleeveless, and multitude of other variations for every occassion.
I could go on about how wonderful indian salwar kameez is, but now let's put the ball
in your court. Go get yourself one today!
