Where's The Party
Director: Benny Mathews Starring: Kal Penn, Sunil Malhotra, Prem Shah, Tina Cherian
Music Director: Jagjit Singh What do you get when you throw a new Indian
immigrant in the midstof American life? (And no, it's not The Guru). The answer
lies in director Benny Matthews' comedy, Where's theParty Yarr?
The often difficult process of assimilation becomes the center ofjokes for
Matthew's latest film, leaving no stone unturned when itcomes to poking fun at
unusual Indian customs for a few quick laughs.
In the film, actor Sunil Malhotra plays Harri Patel, a youngIndian man who
leaves his homeland after an astrologer tells him heis destined to find true
love in America.
Though the storyline may sound like another sappy and predictablelove story, the
film's real focus is actually on an individual'ssearch for identity.
When Harri arrives in Houston, he is taken in by his well-to-douncle and auntie
who try to hide their disdain for his presence intheir home behind their tightly
quenched smiles. The film thenprogresses through a series of scenes chronicling
Harri's "firsts" inAmerica, which includes the first time he uses a bathtub to
his firstcan of spray-on deodorant.
Harri's cousin Mohan Bakshi (Kal Penn) is not as good at hidinghis true
feelings. Mohan, who goes by "Mo," lives a completelyopposite life from Harri.
Mo, an Americanized college student, livesoff of his dad's money and seems to
fail at everything he does, whether at school or with the girls.
The one and only thing he has going for him is that fact that heis popular.
That, and the fact that he promotes exclusive Indianparties that deliberately
exclude FOB's (Fresh off the Boat) such asHarri from attending.
When Harri arrives in the States, the responsibility of lookingafter him falls
on Mo, who is embarrassed to be seen with his FOBcousin. After all he does have
a reputation to uphold. Of course,Harri, being the naive and bright-eyed
immigrant that he is, does notrealize that Mo and his dawgs are not really his
"doggie friends.
