Was just after India had won independence and the air was thick with patriotic fervors. Umakant (Pradeep Kumar), a progressive landlord (Jagirdar), wanting to wipe out the miseries visited upon the poor people by his ancestors, gave away all his lands, and set out to search for work. His wife Sumati (Anita Guha) and son Manav (Deb Mukherjee), waited for years to hear about Umakant. Desperate, they went in search for him. Sumati left Manav, with a kind childless couple who treated his as their own son. But Manav yearned for his father and mother. Even as he grew up, he could never forget them. His obsession, lead him to leave everyone, whom he had grown up with, even the woman he loved Sandhya (Anjana), and come out on the streets in search of his parents.
