Thakur Avadh (Om Puri) is a powerful, evil landlord in a remote village who
rules with an iron hand. His two sons live a debauched life, knowing that their
father will bail them out of any scrape. When they go on a drunken binge and
molest and throw in the ditch a little nine-year-old girl, they go too far. The
child’s father, Rudra (Sanjay Dutt) is a meek and submissive bonded laborer,
who, with his wife Paro (Nandita Das), lives in fear of Thakur Avadh. This
devastating tragedy, however, changes Rudra forever – he turns into a ruthless
avenger, out to seek justice.
