Radha (Nutan) is the daughter of a wealthy aristocrat. She meets a young
boatman, Gopi (Sunil Dutt) every day when she crosses the river. A tender bond
soon develops between the two of them, intensified by their common interest in
music. However society is not ready to accept this relationship..
This smoldering romance is considered by film-buffs to be one of Nutan’s best
roles and showcases a brilliant artiste at the peak of her career. She won the
1967 Filmfare Award for Best Actress in the face of really stiff competition
because 1967 was the year in which several other blockbusters were released.
Laxmikant – Pyarelal were awarded the top honours for Best Music Director and
their simple, sweet tunes like ‘Sawan Ka Mahina’, ‘Ram Kare Aisa Ho Jaye’ and
the title song ‘Hum Yug Yug Se Yeh Geet’ are still as fresh and charming, even
after a quarter of a century.
