Jackpot
Director: R. G. Nayyar Starring: Himanshu Badi, Meghna Naidu
Music Director: Dhruva Phukan
Singers: Kunal Ganjawala, Udit Narayan, Sonu Kakkar, Nagesh, Shaan
Jackpot ' is a story of a married couple played by Himanshu Malik and Meghna
Naidu who realize one fine day that they have hit a "Jackpot" when they come
across a stack of fortune. Directed by Sameer L Baadkar, 'Jackpot' seems to be a
result of the trend that began in 2004 when the combination of thrills and sex
seemed to be a 'Jackpot' for its makers. With 2005 not coming up with optimal
results for such flicks, it all depends upon the actual merits of the movie to
be able to excite the moviegoer. With Sayaji Shinde in a supporting starcast,
'Jackpot' promises some groovy tunes by DJ Phukan. ' Mehbooba ' surprises you at
the very beginning of the album with its superb arrangements that take you on a
love ride. Both the lead singers sing with their heart IN and put up a good
show. Full marks to DJ Phukan for coming up with a haunting melody that stands
out, especially the title word ' Mehbooba ' that is quite effective in an echo
effect (never mind a distinct similarity with ' Anjaana Anjaani ' from ' Yuva
'). Cinematography is cool as well that preps up the proceedings. All said and
done, this is one of the better songs both Himanshu and Meghna have been a part
of in their short career so far.
Calypso music forms the base of the 'fun-on-the-beach' number ' Rom Rom Jal
Jaaye '. Shaan, as always, enjoys his time behind the mike and makes the number
exciting enough to invite people to join the party. OK, so it is not the
chartbuster of the year but then succeeds well in making the party lovers dance
to its tune. This one turns out to be another enjoyable number. From an album
like 'Jackpot', there was a 'nothing' expectation to begin with! But with '
Mehooba ' and ' Rom Rom ', one feels that it has already been money's worth.
This is exactly the reason why one is not immensely disappointed inspite of a
bad song in the form of raunchy ' Khullam Khulla Pyaar Hai Tu Loot Le ' set on
tribal tune! It is quite garish on the ears when the male chorus starts crooning
' khalbali khabali ' while the female singer keeps proving herself time and
again as ' chulbuli '. Ignorance is the best way of just moving on. The surprise
part of the song is Udit Narayan who makes an appearance after a couple of
minutes and the heartening part is his commitment to even such a number that
doesn't have any stakes whatsoever. Title song ' Jackpot ' brings back the
techno-groovy feel to the album that again starts moving on the fast track with
this number. A rap number about the greed for money, power and all the luxuries
in the life, if only one is able to hit the 'Jackpot', sets the context of the
movie there and then and lays the cards clear. This one should be quite
effective if placed in the title sequence and then intermittently during the
defining situations in the movie. The second version of the title song 'Jackpot'
is even more interesting as it narrates the pitfalls when the lead protagonists
actually hit the 'Jackpot'. Again a rap number that does well for a situation
like this, it turns out to be entertaining due to the reversed fortunes. It has
to be admitted that after hearing both the versions of the title song, one does
get a wee bit interested in watching the movie!! For an album like ' Jackpot ',
it is a definite bonus when one hears two romantic melodies that have been
minting money for the album company for a couple of years now - ' Tere Naam -
title song ' and ' Maine Jisko Dil Ye Diya Hai - Muskaan '. Frankly, one doesn't
get tired of hearing these numbers, especially the title song of ' Tere Naam '
and does feel satisfied with the final outcome of the album. Overall Jackpot.
