He`s one of those who needn`t lock the doors of his house while he`s away.
What can be burgled anyway? The wealth of talent is all within him! Muzaffar Ali
is a film director, artist, fashion designer, Sufi follower and politician all
rolled in one... Muzaffar Ali was born in `Kotwara`, a village in the Indian
state of Uttar Pradesh. Young Ali had only a paint brush for company... and an
ambition to be an artist, but his single-room house couldn`t accomodate his
canvas! Wih the help of a friend, Ali managed to find a place where he could
fulfil his artistic desires and in 1968, held his first painting exhibition
there. It all looked so good... except for the fact that only one painting was
sold! The others had to be gifted away. Not losing heart, Ali then began working
with Clarion McCann Advertising Services in Calcutta, the same company in which
Satyajit Ray, the famous film director used to work as an Art Director. While
Ali joined, Mr. Ray had become the Vice Chairman. Subhas Makhhopadhyay, the
famous poet and close friend of Ali`s introduced him to several artists from
Calcutta, and it was here that his mind opened to the idea of using film as a
medium of social comment and artistic expression. After Living in Delhi for a
short while, Ali moved to Bombay, the film city of India. there he worked with
Air India in the publicity department. He was moved by the plight of U.P.
migrants and the degradation their life and culture back in Uttar Pradesh.
Influenced by all this, he made the film `Gaman`(the migration). The film got
many awards including the special Jury award at the 7th International Film
festival in New Delhi. The film was also awarded the `Silver Peacock` at the
29th National Film festival for `Best Music` and `Best female Playback Singer`,
and turne out to be one of the most sensitive films on the problem of migration
from village to cities. The film also received the Film fare Award for `Best
Director`, besides representing India at the `Manheim Film Week` in Germany. `Gaman`
was followed by `Umrao Jaan` in 1981, in which he related the story of a
mid-19th century courtesan of Lucknow, based on the novel written by the famous
writer Mirza Mohammed Hadi Ruswa. The film was appreciated both in India as well
as abroad. Muzaffar Ali resigned from Air India in the same year in order to
devote all his time to films, art... and music! The Ghazals that Ali had used in
`Gaman` helped him identify with the human anguish of helplessness and
separation, inspiring him to launch his own album called `Jaam-e-Ishq` under the
label of `Kotwara Studios`. The album was the soundtrack of a music ballet based
on the poem of the thirteenth century Sufi poet, Saint Rumi.
