Vikram Mayur (Shahrukh Khan), born into the very rich business family of Mayurs, is settled in England. The family of Mayurs has always been very pro-Britain, and therefore anti-Indian. Growing up in such an environment, Vikram looks down upon India, having no intentions of ever visiting India, his motherland.

Vikram's late brother Hari, has always been the black sheep of the family simply because he was pro-India. His love for India makes him abandon his family and settle in India. Due to an unfortunate incident Hari dies, leaving behind his 8 year old son Nandu (Sunny Singh) with his sister-in-law Bijuriya (Sonali Bendre). Because of Hari's strange ways, niether Bijuriya nor Nandu know about the Mayurs or their fortune. Neither do the Mayurs know about the existence of Nandu, the rightful heir to their empire, who was making a living, polishing shoes in the streets of Bombay.

When Mr. Madadgar (Saeed Jaffery), a lawyer and Birjuriya's well wisher, finds out about the Mayurs, Vikram is finally forced to step on Indian soil. Upon arriving in India Vikram wants to sort out things fast and leave immediately with Master Mayur, alias Nandu. The successful businessman in him thinks that he can buy absolutely anything in the world with money, including paying off Birjuriya, for her services in looking after Nandu for 8 years.

When Vikram learns of how much Birjuriya has invested in Nandu's life - love, trust, caring, devotion, he realizes that such emotions cannot be bought. He is unable to separate Nandu from Birjuriya. He also begins to fall in love with the same value system that his brother Hari had come to India for. Slowly Vikram's heart knows a conflict that he had never experienced before - his western upbringing vs. his growing fondness and love for India.
