Dil-e-Nadaan
Director: Sridhar Starring: Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Prada, Smita Patil, Shatrughan Sinha
The label 'Sentimental Moods' doesn't really do justice to what this multi-'kal'-oured
nostalgia album does to us. Thirteen pristine, pensive and powerful compositions
exuding a wondrous wistfulness. As usual with the Revival series, the impeccably
re-recorded orchestral passages don't only enhance our hearing pleasure, they
provide a new dimension to the tunes.
The title song, with its beautiful arabesque movements written by Javed Akhtar's
father, Jan Nisar Akhtar, is among Lata Mangeshkar's favourite solos. When she
sings Aye dil-e-nadaan aarzoo kya hai justuju kya hai we are overtaken by a
sense of spiritual restlessness. The other Khayyam composition by Lataji Dikhayi
diye yun ke bekhud kiya, humein aapse bhi juda kar chale elicits a spontaneous 'Wah'
from the Nightingale whenever she talks about this eloquent song.
Eloquence is the key to the compelling collection. You may be familiar with
Bhupinder's Ek akela iss shaher mein and Mohd Rafi's Yeh duniya yeh mehfil. But
what about Laxmikant-Pyarelal's Yeh daman ab na choote and RD Burman's Aaj to
meri hansi udai?
The latter is a special undiscovered gem born to sob unseen, now rescued by the
anthologist who mixes the known and the virtually unknown like Beeti na bitayi
raina from Parichay and Mohabbat ke suhane din from Maryada without losing a
grip over the grammar of making statements in song form.
An ideal blend of the beautiful and the dimmed (by the passage of time), this
collection lights up our lives even though the songs sing about melancholic
thoughts.
The composers are all in their element. Whether it's Madan Mohan in that
fabulous Gulzar Ghazal Ruke ruke se qadam ruk ke baar-baar chale, qaraar deke
tere dar se beqraar chale (wah, Gulzar Saab wah) or Madan Mohan again in the
unreleased pain-drop sigh-lines of Kaise kategi zindagi (lyric writer uncredited),
you really can't equal the power and glory of these maestros who wrote poetry
because it had to be written, composed feelings because they were there, and
sang emotions because there was nothing else they would rather do
