lt was the best of times and the worst of times", so opens Charles Dicken’s A Tale of Two Cities. And this is exactly what film maker Anurag Kashyap seems to be going through these days. Whereas on one side he is winning accolades and awards for his films in foreign shores, on the other hand he is struggling to even get his film released in his home country. First noticed in Satya, he then gave us Paanch (supposed to be the most watched and acclaimed un-released movie) and is now back with Black Friday which was last year’s entry to the Locarno Film Festival from India, chosen by the festival director Irene Bignardi herself. The film is based on S. Hussein Zaidi’s book which was inspired by the Mumbai blasts of March 9, 1993. The film uses documentary footage alongside dramatic re-constructions of the bombings, and goes on to overtly trace its linkage to the Babri Masjid demolition. The film was cleared by the Censor Board but the Mumbai High Court imposed a stay on the film’s release, when thirty- four of the accused moved court on the ground that it would create a bias against them. Ironically, the accused are the ones who are portrayed in a humane light as is evident from the character of Badshah Khan (Tiger Memon’s henchman), who is manipulated, leaving him remorse- ful and frustrated in the end. According to the court ruling, by naming the accused in the film, a fair trial may not be possible. But Kashyap argues that the book from which the film takes off has long been in circulation, so why ban the film? Most of the films which are based on true events like Chand Bujb Goya (Gujrat Riots), Bombay (1993 riots) and Bandit Queen (Phoolan Devi) have faced flak for their portrayal of the events they tried to re-construct. But with Black Friday there is a little difference. The case here is not ideology driven or state- sponsored censorship, but about the legal rights of the accused and the creative freedom of an artist. And whether it gets released or not, it has surely raised an issue to be addressed.
