Many predecessors have worked hard to make it successful out of whom Hiralal
Sen is known to be as the legendary of Indian Cinema. With pioneering zeal and
untiring energy, he learnt about film projection, imported different machines
and also had a few parts made indigenously and formed the Royal Bioscope Company
in 1898 for screening films supported by his brother Matilal Sen. As an
exhibitor, he struggled for two years and ultimately became successful in making
short films. Others especially Jesuit Priest, Father Lafont and Amarendra Dutta
of Classic Theatre encouraged him. He shot scenes from staged plays mostly at
Classic Theatre and also of actualities and even made on advertising film.
Depicted from an issue of February 2, 1901 from a Bengali newspaper, 'The
Bengalee' it was quiet evident that Amarendra Dutta publicised that a series of
superfine pictures from the world renowned play 'Bhramar', 'Alibaba', 'Hariraj',
'Dol Lila', 'Sitaram', 'Sarala' etc. will be produced along with other
advertised plays at the Classic Theatre. Gradually, these epics were all shot by
Hiralal Sen that put him to the top of Indian Cinema. In the following years, he
made many films of many kinds, which were of short duration. A person of
outstanding enterprise and business acumen, held on to the thread left by Late
Hiralal Sen in the year 1917 was J.F.Madan. He started showing moving pictures
in a tent in the open space of the Calcutta Maidan and later at other places.
Being a Parsi, he prepared the field for Bengali cinema's growth in its infancy.
He not only made film shows familiar and popular to the Bengali populace of the
flourishing city but soon started making films as well; and ultimately Madan
Theatres held a position of pre-eminence in showing and making Bengali films. In
the year 1919, Madan Theatres made the first full length Bengali feature film, 'Bilwamangal'.
It was directed by Rustomjee Dotiwala and released for public viewing on 8th
November of the same year. This movie was made on the trend of Phalke's films as
co-existent who had never deviated from his adherence to religious and
devotional stories. The advancement of Bengali films went on steadily after the
success of 'Bilwamangal'. Referring to the list provided in Indian Motion
Pictures Almanac edited by the Late Bagiswar Jha, two movies were made in 1920,
eleven in 1921, seventeen in 1922, seven in 1923 and nine in 1924. There was a
hike in production after 1926 and that had reached to the highest annual figure
of 20 in 1931. The predominance of Madan Theatres became less evident as more
and more producers entered the field.
Dhiren Ganguly, formally associated with Madan Theatres, formed the Indo-British
Film Company. He wrote the script and acted in the leading role in the concern's
first 6-reel long film, 'Bilet Pherat'. The movie was released on 2nd February
1921, at Russa Theatre (Purna Cinema). The story line was based on satirical
comedy in which Dhiren Ganguly demonstrated his extraordinary mimetic and
expressive skills.
