Director: Ashok Kaul Starring: Hema Malini, Milind Soman, Tabu
Music Director: Prakash Bhatia
Bhagmati - the queen of fortunes is a legendary love story between price Mohd. Quili Qutub Shah and his ardent love, and the beauteous Bhagmati. History says, the fourth Qutb Shahi ruler built the city of Hyderabad at the request of his ladylove. Directed by national award winner Ashok Kaul, the movie has Tabu and Milind Soman playing the lead roles. Hema Malini is giving a special appearance in the movie by delivering a classical dance performance. The film is of two hours and forty minutes duration with about half of it is in animation, live actors interact with live characters something like 'Who framed Rogger Rabbit' and 'Spacejam'. Bhaggmati has six songs by renowned writers like Bashir Badr, Abbas Tyrewala, Nida Fazli, Ravindra Jain and Ashok Kaul. Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadekar, Roop Kumar Rathod have lent their voices to the music of Vishal Bhardwaj.
Asha's number 'Jiya jaye amma' is strictly for the dance floor, which is strictly for the dance floor. Song expresses the girl's restlessness in living without her love. Music is by Vishal Bharadwaj and the lyrics by Nida Fazli go well together. Rapid beats and Asha's forever-young voice will be admired in 'Jiya jaye amma'. 'Prem Diwani' (Asha Bhosle) written by director Ashok Kaul, which is a recital of Sanskrit shlokas. It is where the queen tries to convey her distress to her beloved.
'Alvida' sung, written and composed by Ravindra Jain with a significant flavor of the oldies that is ironically refreshing. The song is where King Qutub Shah and his love Bhaggmati are being estranged. Next comes 'Falsafi falsafi' telling the love story of the two lovers in a folk manner. Again rendered by Ravindra Jain the situational song says that love is eternal; lovers never die they are reborn with a new name.
'Ishq abhi tak zinda hai' Fareed Sabri Jaipuri, Vinod Sehgal in 'sufi' flavor again felicitates timeless love. Vishal Bharadwaj composes the qawalli sung expertly by the singers. Nida Fazli's lyrics are philosophical and impressive.
Suresh Wadker's magical voice stirs up emotions in 'Kaise kahan' written by Abbas Tyrewala. Vishal uses piano to create a romantic effect while Suresh weaves magic by his singing. How we wish they had included the instrumental version of this one!
The magic continues with 'Meri Jaan' by Rekha Bharadwaj who was made famous by 'Tere ishq mein'. The classic ghazal is empowered by Bashir Badr's excellent poetry and Vishal's skillful music. Bhaggmati might turn out to be a classic lovers delight, for whom the album has many tracks. On the other hand 'Jiya jaye amma' will entertain the masses whereas 'Meri Jaan' and 'Kaise kahan' beg to differ from the rest.
