Adapted from a story by Prabhavathi Devi Saraswathi, 'Bhabhi (1957)' is the story of
Rattan Lal (Balraj Sahni) an honest and hardworking man who accepts the
responsibility of bringing up his three brothers after the death of their
father. Rattan Lal becomes a very successful cloth merchant and after the sudden
death of his wife, remarries Shanta (Pandari Bai) who treats Rattan Lal's son
Mitthu as her own child. Shanta's widowed sister moves in with the family and
becomes friends with Rattan Lal's youngest brother (Jagdeep).
