Naushad is a living legend as far as Hindi film music is concerned. Naushad was honoured with 13th Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1982 for 1981 for his outstanding contribution to cause of Indian Cinema. Born on 25th December 1919 at Lucknow, Naushad was crazy about films from a very young age and more so he was attracted to the magic of the music made in the 'pit' by the musicians to enhance the picture displayed on the screen. It was this attraction towards music and magic of movies that Naushad took a job in a music store repairing harmoniums He had his training as a classical musician, his first job was as a piano and harmonium player in a theatrical company. It was here that Naushad earned his first harmonium and the enthusiastic lad then joined the 'pit' of the local theatre. Later on the quest for music drove the boy to move to Mumbai where he joined famous Music Director Khemchand Prakash as an assistant. Later he established himself in 1937.

His first film as a independent Music Director was Prem Nagar in 1940. His first great music success was with the film Ratan. Out of the films for which he had composed the music, 35 have been Silver Jubilee, 12 Golden Jubilee and 3 were Diamond Jubilee. The music in films like Shahjehan, Dard, Dillagi, Aan, Mother India, Ganga Jamuna, Mere Mehboob, Anmol Ghadi, Anokhi Ada, Andaz, Mela, Babul, Uran Khatola, Mughal-E-Azam, Palki and Baiju Bawara remain a fine example of his greatness. Naushad also has the distinction of having introduced singers like Mohammed Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor, Suraiya and Tuntun in the world of Hindi cinema. He won Filmfare Award in 1952 for Baiju Bawra, Lata Mangeshkar Award in 1984, Padmabhushan in 1992. BFJA Award for Best Music Director Ganga Jamuna in 1961.
