Baawre Nain
Director: Rajinder Singh Starring: Pradip Kumar Geeta Bali
Music Director: Ashok Kumar, Pradeep Kumar
Singers: Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar
What ever may be Pradip Kumar‘s calibre as an actor, he recently made an
eloquent comment about Geeta Bali and her acting talents. He said, ”Geeta was
the fairy of histrionics who wore a human form”. Kya baat hai!
After having sung for a bucketful of film heroines, Lata Mangeshkar has a `soft
spot‘ for Geeta Bali. Lata had once told me ”I liked Geeta Bali very much. She
may not be beautiful in the traditional sense, but she was very cute, very
charming, she had a good height, an excellent figure and large eyes. She was
good-natured too, very affable. What grace she had!” Need I say more?
Her looks may be a subject of debate, but Geeta‘s acting abilities were
undisputable. She had a different kind of appeal. Was it in her chubby, slightly
puffed-up cheeks or in her `come hither‘ glance which enticed you alluringly? As
Geeta says in a song: `Apne pe bharosa hai toh ek dav lagaa le‘.
Geeta Bali had in her an irresistible pull which made you whistle `Sham dhale,
khidki tale‘. She combined with immaculate grace the sprightly bubbliness of
say, Jaya Bhaduri and Tanuja with Waheeda Rehman‘s fragile sensitivity. Which is
why, she could belt out `Sun bairi balam sach bol‘, in `Baawre Nain‘ as
effortlessly as she rendered `Rooth ke tum jo chal diye‘, a pathos-filled number
from `Jal Tarang‘. While she made a perfect pair with Dev Anand in `Pocket Maar‘,
`Baazi‘, `Faraar‘, `Milaap‘, `Jaal‘,‘Jaljala‘ and `Phera‘, Geeta Bali was
equally at ease as the leading lady of funster Master Bhagwan in `Albela‘ and `Jhamela‘.
In `Albela‘she has invested the simple `Ramba Samba‘ dance with exquisite charm
and style.
Kidar Sharma‘s `Suhaag Raat‘ was Geeta‘s first film, although she was fleetingly
seen in a dance sequence in `Patjhar‘. Geeta soon rose to dizzy heights of
success and fame. However, sadly, she could never bag a life-time role during
her brief career. Barring Dev Anand, no other leading hero teamed up with her.
Dilip Kumar ? never. Raj Kapoor? only once, in `Baawre Nain”. She was paired
with stalwarts such as Ashok Kumar (`Raag Rang‘), Motilal (`Lalten‘) and Balraj
Sahni (`C.I.D. Girl‘) very rarely.
Geeta spent the best years of her career playing heroine to non-so famous actors
such as Prem Adib (`Bholi‘), Jairaj (`Garibi‘), Rehman (`Shaadi Ki Raat‘),
Bharat Bhooshan (`Kavi‘), Abhi Bhattacharya (`Naina‘), Kamal Kapoor (`Ameer‘),
Karan Deewan (`Sau Ka Note‘), Shekhar (`Nayaa Ghar‘), Sajjan (`Najaria‘),
Amarnath (`Lachak‘) Jaswant (`Hotel‘) and Suresh (`Aji Bas Shukriyaa‘). Years
on, she showcased her marvellous talents in C-grade films, yet her acting
abilities never staled, nor did her formidable fan club dwindle.
Geeta Bali‘s name was linked with Kidar Sharma, Guru Dutt and Dev Anand at
various points of time. She created shockwaves in film industry by tying the
knot with Shammi Kapoor who was younger than her by two years. She was the first
actress who stepped into the Kapoor `Khaandaan‘ as their `bahu‘. In `Rangeen
Raatein‘, Geeta performed a rare feat in that she was dressed like a man in the
entire film. A unique event in the annals of world cinema, one would say. Geeta
died an untimely death because of small-pox. Writer-director Rajinder Singh Bedi
had an ambitious plan of turning his novel, `Ek Chaddar Maili Si‘ into a film
with Geeta Bali in the central role of `Raano‘. Following Geeta‘s death, Bedi
shelved the plan.
