American Daylight’ is Bobby Bedi’s produced small-budgeted English film under
his Kaleidoscope Films banner, with a love story in the backdrop of a call
centre in Delhi. Prominent artistes in the cast include Koel Purie, British
actor Nick Moran, Vijay Raaz, Raj Zutshi and Gulshan Grover. Academy Award
winner Roger Christian directs the film. He has formerly made films like
Nostradamus, Masterminds and Battlefield Earth. The film offers the kind of
music that you don’t encounter frequently. There are old and new English hits
and classics presented in a novel way. The soundtrack features assorted Indian
and International composers doing the music of the tracks. Amaan and Ayaan Ali
Bangash, sons of Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, compose four tracks. This is
their first film related work and their plunge into film music gives the notion
that this is just the beginning. Rich with knowledge in Indian classical music
their tunes reflect the same. They take on with 'Final Calling' the title track
of the album. It is theme music of international standards. The mood and feel of
the track is awesome and it has a spell binding effect while listening. Comes a
qawallis from their repertoire called 'Khwajaji' with lyrics by Madan Gopal
Singh and it goes fine again. On a more musical note appears 'Getting Involved'
a soothing instrumental piece whereas Visible God is enriched with Vedic chants
and is a fusion number.
Composer Yolanda Charles presents 'Born To Love', a highly melodic track by
Mamayo and Carleen Anderson laced with soft music and simple words. This is out
rightly likeable. Joan Baez croons away 'Diamonds and Rust' on the note of the
former track. Both the tracks are a representation of quality and excellence
with the limitations of catering only to the urban audience. The supple and soft
affair going so far takes a different turn with 'Take Control' rendered by
Jaimeson, Angel Blu and CK. This is a fast and pacy track that keeps you
swinging. Even the next tack 'You're Not Alone' by TNT hints at something
similar. Top-notch music makes both the tracks aplomb. An instrumental track
'Dharma' with the beats of tabla by Graeme Clark, Paul Spong, Azam Ali and Roger
Christian is a pretty rhythmic track with soft instruments and a superb sounding
vocal. Retro and classic number 'Sacrifice' of Sir Elton John appears again and
mesmerizes with the same velocity as it has done before. For a change again
emerge fast paced 'You Keep On Shining' by Hazard County. But melody revives
again with 'Love You More' by Shanti Burns. A classic track is 'Heer' sung by
Reena Bhardwaj with music by Nitin Sawhney and W.Shah. Both in terms of the
vocals quality and the music the track is incomparable. Random Song is the title
song of the film by The Measures and Jennifer Macdonald. This is without a doubt
among the best in the album. The album comes to a close with Finishing Line
performed by Marti Pellow and Graeme Clark. This romantic number keeps the
spirit of melody alive in our mind long after we’ve encountered it. The sound
track is exquisite and brilliant. The only shortcoming that comes across its
success is that it is an English album. Some suitable elite and urban buyers may
go for it owing to the kind and quality music that it provides, but it won’t
find a large buyer opting for it. But on this account we should not compromise
on quality!
