Inspector Bhuvan Sen (Utpal Dutt) is newly posted to the remote Bengali
village of Dhaniakali. He discovers that under the peaceful surface, lies a
cauldron of misery. He becomes particularly fascinated by Madhusudan Roy
Choudhury (Uttam Kumar) a decadent drunk, whom the villagers regard as an
inhuman beast. The inspector realizes that the only thing that may reform Madhusudan is the love he has for Lekha (Sharmila Tagore). Lekha had loved him
once, but turned against him for mysterious reasons.
