A kingdom parched by years of drought is hoping the seven-year fire sacrifice to
Indra, the God of Rain, will bear fruit. Presiding over it is the chief priest,
Parvasu. Yavakri, his cousin and rival is returning from 10 years of penance in
the forest. Though he has gained considerable power, enlightenment has not been
his. Arvasu, Parvasu's younger brother, in love with a tribal woman, Nittilai,
hopes to convince the village elders and marry her.
