Adapted from the play The Fire and the Rain by the notable Indian playwright Girish Karnad, Agnivarsha is a story derived from "The Myth of Yavakri" from the epic Mahabharatha.

A kingdom parched by years of drought is hoping the seven-year fire sacrifice to Indra, the God of Rain, will bear fruit. Presiding over it is the chief priest, Parvasu. Yavakri, his cousin and rival is returning from 10 years of penance in the forest. Though he has gained considerable power, enlightenment has not been his. Arvasu, Parvasu's younger brother, in love with a tribal woman, Nittilai, hopes to convince the village elders and marry her.

When Yavakri decides to settle old scores by seducing Parvasu's beautiful wife, his ex-lover Vishakha, the heavens and earth are shaken and Arvasu and Nittilai are the hapless victims of the inexorable flow of events.
