Some moviegoers and critics will probably dismiss “Prom” as just another predictable offering from the Disney formula factory. Which is precisely what it is. But here’s the thing: There are new tweeners every year. To them, the characters and plot devices in this perfectly competent film might well seem fresh.

Aimee Teegarden of “Friday Night Lights” is Nova, a serious high school student who is particularly serious about the prom: she’s its main organizer and wants everything to be perfect. She’d also like a date to it, but the guy she has in mind, a bland fellow do-gooder, doesn’t get the concept.

Happily, though, fate is unkind to the shed containing the prom decorations â€" is that a “Carrie” homage tucked into a Disney film? â€" and she has to rebuild them quickly with the help of the school bad boy, Jesse (Thomas McDonell). You know what’s going to happen.

But your children might not. Lots of side plots about who’s going to ask whom to the big event propel things along, with Nicholas Braun making the best comic contributions as a hapless senior who has waited too long to snag a date. Anyway, in the end, tuxedos are rented, connections are made, and, of course, lessons are learned.
