Drinking Coffee Helps Fight Alzheimer's

Consuming three cups of coffee per day can greatly decrease the threat of you getting Alzheimer's disease, new evidence implies.

Individuals drinking their regular caffeine treat have half the "mental decline" of those who do not go near the stuff at all it suggests.

However drinking over three cups doesn't appear to have an increased protective impact.

Researchers believe that caffeine could start a chain reaction in the brain that stops the damage carried out by Alzheimer's.

However they also point out that coffee has other elements in it that could be of help, such as antioxidants.

In a document on their discoveries, they proposed that doctors could one day give coffee to the older generation.

'Drinking three cups a day was associated with the smallest cognitive decline,' they informed the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

'Because of the worldwide use of coffee and ageing populations, these results could have important public health implications.'

Experts from Holland, Finland and Italy observed 676 healthy males, all born between 1900 and 1920.

The men's drinking patterns were studied from 1966 and they had five - annual examinations to test their mental condition.

The British Coffee Association is quoted by the Metro newspaper as saying:'We cannot say you should drink coffee to prevent the disease. But if you enjoy it sensibly in three to five cups a day then it appears your risk will be reduced.'

However, the Alzheimer's Society announced that further research on the matter needed to be done.

Alzheimer's kills chemical messengers within the brain and 750,000 people in Britain suffer from it.

Many people pass away within a decade of being diagnosed with the problem, and the expense of looking after sufferers of it is more than strokes, heart disease and cancer all together.
